2011 New Technology Presentation Meetings

"2011 New Technology Presentation Meetings" was held under the auspices of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST)‚ universities‚ and public research institutes at the JST Hall (Yonbancho‚ Chiyoda City) on July 19‚ 2011.

The meeting aimed to introduce research results created by universities and institutes to facilitate their practical use and make presentations on their research achievements. This meeting also featured a consultation session regarding technology transfer and joint research.

This was the third New Technology Presentation Meetings‚ where presentations on six research achievements were made. Professor Kenichi Uehara (Tsukuba Industrial Liaison and Cooperative Research Center) gave a briefing on "Industry-University Cooperation activities in the University of Tsukuba."
81 participants attended the Meeting in spite of a rough weather of typhoon.

IU School of Education among the top online education programs in US News rankings

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University School of Education in Bloomington is highly ranked in the first US News & World Report ranking of top online graduate education degree programs unveiled today, Jan. 10, on the publication's website. Over 160 institutions offering online graduate degree programs in education participated, and the IU School of Education ranked in the upper tier in each of the four categories.
IUconnectedEDIUconnectED includes all IU School of Education graduate-level courses and programs offered completely online, including courses from the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses.
The IU School of Education ranked highest in the category of "Admissions Selectivity," at 15th, reflecting the fact that it's attracting high-achieving students from around the world. Under the methodology used by US News, the IU School of Education scored 82.3 out of a possible 100 points in this category, compiled by measuring entering student GPA and GRE scores, the acceptance rate for the program, and the standardized test and essay required for program application. The School of Education also ranked highly in "Student Services and Technology," coming in at 30, due largely to a variety of technologies used to create interactive learning environments and provide support to online students.
The School of Education also placed in the upper tier for the categories of "Faculty Credentials and Training" (43rd) and "Teaching Practices and Student Engagement" (50th).
US News produced the new rankings in an effort to provide more information about online education programs. The rankings of online programs include education, business, computer information technology, engineering and nursing.
"The School of Education is a leader in online distance education," said Gerardo Gonzalez, dean of the IU School of Education. "While designing, offering and researching innovative online education for more than a decade, our faculty has been absolutely committed to the highest standards of best practices. I'm glad to see the quality of our programs recognized through these new national rankings."
The first online courses and degree programs began at the IU School of Education in 1999. In the fall semester of 2012, the school will offer IU's first completely online doctorate, the Ed.D. in instructional systems technology. The school has launched IUconnectED, a new Web portal that conveniently coordinates access to the school's online learning programs, including graduate-level courses and programs from the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses. Through IUconnectED, students can take a variety of courses to earn credentials ranging from professional certificates to master's degrees and online doctorates.

UCSI University and Ricoh Malaysia Establish Partnership to Create Research and Development Lab

Kuala Lumpur, 23 March, 2011 - UCSI University and Ricoh Malaysia have established an industrial partnership to encourage research in information technology. The two entities signed a Memorandum of Agreement this morning at the south wing of UCSI University’s Kuala Lumpur campus to seal the strategic partnership.

Under the agreement, Ricoh will establish a research and development laboratory within the University’s School of Information Technology. The laboratory will include cutting-edge devices and solutions such as smart phones, iPads, Macintosh computers and Ricoh’s latest multifunctional printing products to encourage research and development in information technology that will lead to innovative products and solutions.

A firm believer of innovative technology, Managing Director of Ricoh (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Mr Lim Eng Weng expressed his excitement in partnering UCSI University.

“We’re excited to be collaborating with UCSI University for such an inspiring project to represent the next leading edge and has the potential to stimulate Malaysian enterprises and innovation in the coming years. The objective of the Lab is to provide a highly innovative and technological facility to cultivate research and development among students,” said Mr Lim at the signing ceremony.

The agreement also establishes Ricoh as an official industry advisor to UCSI University with the ability to review the University’s information technology programmes and offer suggestions to enhance them. UCSI University students will also be able to take part in internships at Ricoh as part of the new collaboration.

UCSI University Vice Chancellor Dr Robert Bong said the partnership is part of the University’s innovative learning and teaching pedagogy to provide students a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

“Through this agreement, UCSI University strengthens its commitment to provide students a blended-learning experience with both academic and practical training,” he said. “Furthermore, our new partnership assures our programmes are industry-driven with relevant training to ensure our students succeed in life after graduation.”

As one of its first research projects, UCSI University is planning on developing smart phone batch printing solutions that will enable smart phone users to print documents efficiently from their phones. The project aims to develop a prototype of batch printing application for Android smart phones that supports document and PDF files. UCSI University Faculty of Management and Information Technology Associate Dean Chloe Thong Chee Ling said the lab will expose students to real-life applications of information technology.

“At the School of Information Technology, it’s important to train our students to work with the latest technology,” she said. “With this agreement with Ricoh, our students will have the opportunity to work with the latest technological equipment and to conduct their own research to stay at the forefront of the industry.”
